When I was at PFW, we had a longstanding award called the Golden Toe that went to the best punter or kicker for the season. Here at Football Relativity, we’re not going to rip off the Golden Toe, but we are going to start a regular feature called the Crazy Kicker of the Week.
We retroactively awarded Titans backup punter A.J. Trapasso the award for the first week of the preseason. (He actually played in the Hall of Fame game, which is Week Zero of the preseason, but it’s our award, so we can plug him in wherever.) Trapasso’s stat line for that game included two rushes for six net yards and nine total points. He ran for a 40-yard touchdown on a sweet fake punt and then ran for negative-34 yards to take a safety at the end of the game to preserve a 21-18 Titans win. We won’t see a better punter rushing line all season. (By the way, if Trapasso hadn’t won for week one, he could have beaten out Ochocinco in Week 2 for being the guy who plunked the mega video board in the new Dallas stadium during game action. Never has a backup punter had such an interesting preseason.)
For Week 2 of the preseason, we already have our winner – Cincinnati’s Chad Ochocinco. The star wide receiver filled in for Shayne Graham and kicked an extra point and had one kickoff in the Bengals’ 7-6 win over the Patriots. For a kicker, it wasn’t a great achievement, but for a wide receiver it was good work.
We’ll continue to award the Crazy Kicker of the Week honors as necessary throughout the season, and may even have a Crazy Kicker of the Season award in our season wrapup.
